What Is Faith According to the Bible?

If someone asked you to define faith, what would you say?

Many people describe faith as believing something without evidence or simply hoping everything will work out. Others think faith means believing in God or attending church regularly.

The Bible offers a much richer definition.

Romans 4 teaches that faith is believing God. It’s more than believing God exists—it’s trusting His character, believing His promises, and choosing to live as though what He says is true.

That simple truth changes everything.

Why Faith Matters in Christianity

The Bible describes faith as the foundation of our relationship with God.

Faith isn’t something Christians add onto life after they have everything figured out. It’s the very way we begin and continue our walk with Him.

Romans 4 explains that faith is the “currency” of God’s kingdom. Just as different countries operate with different currencies, God’s kingdom operates through faith.

That means our relationship with God isn’t built on trying harder or earning His approval.

It’s built on trusting Him.

The Story of Abraham’s Faith

To explain faith, the apostle Paul points to Abraham.

God made Abraham an incredible promise. Although he and his wife Sarah were elderly and had no children, God promised they would become the parents of a great nation and that their descendants would be impossible to count.

From a human perspective, the promise made no sense.

Everything Abraham could see suggested it was impossible.

Yet Abraham chose to believe God.

Notice what Scripture emphasizes.

Abraham wasn’t made right with God because he performed enough good deeds.

He was made right with God because he trusted the One who made the promise.

His faith rested in God’s character, not in his own ability.

The Difference Between Believing in God and Believing God

This may be one of the most important distinctions Christians can understand.

Many people believe in God.

They believe He exists.

They believe Jesus lived.

They believe the Bible contains truth.

Those are important first steps.

But biblical faith goes further.

Faith means believing God.

It means trusting what He says even when circumstances make His promises seem impossible.

It means believing His wisdom is better than ours.

It means believing His plan is trustworthy, even when we can’t see the outcome.

Faith is deeply relational.

It’s built on knowing the One who made the promise.

Faith Changes How We Live

When we truly believe God, our lives begin to change.

We believe God when He says forgiveness is better than bitterness.

We believe God when He tells us to love people who are difficult to love.

We believe God when He calls us to generosity instead of fear.

We believe God when suffering doesn’t make sense but we trust He is still working.

Faith isn’t pretending life is easy.

Faith is trusting God when life isn’t easy.

That kind of trust grows through relationship.

The more we know God’s character, the easier it becomes to trust His promises.

How Can You Grow Your Faith?

Faith grows the same way every relationship grows.

By spending time together.

As we read Scripture, pray, worship, and walk with God daily, we begin to recognize His faithfulness again and again.

Every answered prayer…

Every moment of His provision…

Every reminder of His grace…

Strengthens our confidence that He truly is who He says He is.

That’s why Christianity isn’t simply about believing certain facts.

It’s about walking with a Person.

The Good News

The good news of the gospel isn’t simply that God asks us to have faith.

It’s that He has proven Himself faithful.

Throughout Scripture—and ultimately through Jesus—God has demonstrated that every promise He makes can be trusted.

Like Abraham, we’re invited to place our confidence not in ourselves, but in the God who always keeps His promises.

When we do, faith becomes more than a belief.

It becomes a way of life.
