If you’ve ever wondered what Christians actually believe, you’re not alone.
Maybe you’ve talked with Christian friends who believe different things, watched debates online, or simply wondered why there seem to be so many different versions of Christianity. With so many voices claiming to represent Christianity, it can be difficult to know what is actually at the center of the Christian faith.
In a world full of competing ideas about truth, it’s easy to wonder what Christianity actually teaches.
So, what do Christians really believe?
While Christians may differ on some secondary issues, the heart of Christianity has remained the same for nearly 2,000 years. At its core, Christianity is about one person, Jesus Christ, and one message – the Gospel, or “Good News.”
Understanding that changes everything.
Christianity Is Centered on Jesus
One of the biggest misconceptions about Christianity is that it’s primarily a religion of rules. Others believe it’s about being a good person. Some think Christianity is mainly about politics, tradition, or belonging to a particular denomination.
While those topics often get attention, they aren’t the foundation of the Christian faith.
Christianity doesn’t begin with a list of rules to follow. It begins with a person to know. Everything Christians believe flows from who Jesus is and what He has done.
The center of Christianity is Jesus.
Christians believe Jesus is more than a wise teacher or historical figure. They believe He is the Son of God who entered the world, lived a perfect life, died on the cross for humanity’s sins, and rose from the dead.
Everything else in Christianity flows from that truth. If Jesus isn’t who He claimed to be, Christianity falls apart. But if Jesus truly died and rose again, then His life, His teachings, and His invitation deserve our attention.
What Is the Gospel?
The word gospel simply means “good news.”
But what makes it such good news?
The good news begins with the reality that God loves people deeply and created us to know Him. The Bible also teaches that humanity has chosen its own way instead of God’s. The Bible calls that sin.
Sin separates people from God and leaves us unable to repair the relationship on our own.
That’s where Jesus comes in.
Christians believe Jesus willingly took our place by dying on the cross. Through His resurrection, He defeated sin and death, making forgiveness and new life available to everyone who trusts Him.
The Gospel isn’t simply good news. It’s the good news that Jesus has overcome sin, death, and the grave. Christians believe the Gospel is good news because it tells the story of a victorious Savior who offers hope and new life to everyone who trusts Him.
Why Does Christianity Sometimes Feel Confusing?
If Christianity is centered on Jesus, why do people have so many different ideas about it? Throughout history, people have often added other priorities to the center of their faith.
Sometimes Christianity becomes more about politics than Jesus.
Sometimes it becomes more about personal success than Jesus.
Sometimes it’s reduced to moral behavior while forgetting the grace that changes hearts.
Other times, people reshape Christianity until it reflects their own preferences instead of the teachings of Jesus. When that happens, the central message becomes harder to see.
The Christian faith continually calls people back to its foundation:
Jesus Christ and His Gospel.
What Makes Christianity Different?
Every worldview attempts to answer life’s biggest questions.
- Who am I?
- Why am I here?
- What’s wrong with the world?
- How can things be made right?
Christianity answers those questions by pointing to Jesus.
Rather than teaching people to earn God’s acceptance, Christianity teaches that God’s love comes first. Instead of saying people must save themselves, Christianity proclaims that Jesus has already done what we could never do on our own.
That is why Christians call the Gospel “good news.”
It’s an invitation to receive grace, not a reward for perfect performance.
What Does This Mean for You?
Whether you’ve been around church your whole life or you’re exploring Christianity for the very first time, we’re glad you’re here. And the invitation is the same.
Start with Jesus.
Before getting caught up in debates, traditions, or opinions, take time to discover who Jesus is and what He accomplished through His life, death, and resurrection. The more you learn about Jesus, the more you’ll understand Christianity and what Christians actually believe.
Your Next Step
If you’re exploring Christianity, don’t feel like you need to have all the answers before taking the next step.
Keep asking questions.
Read one of the Gospels in the Bible, such as John or Mark.
Watch the message that inspired this post.
Talk with someone you trust about faith.
Most importantly, spend time learning about Jesus, because that’s where Christianity begins.
At Quest Church, we believe everyone has a next step. Whether you’re exploring faith for the first time, returning to church after years away, or simply asking honest questions, we’d love to walk alongside you. You don’t have to have everything figured out before you begin. Simply take the next step.
If you’re in the Augusta and Grovetown area, we’d love to welcome you on a Sunday. And if you’re reading from somewhere else, we hope this is the beginning of a deeper journey of discovering the hope found in Jesus.
